The Zen House is a fresh escape from the typical Carmel Cottage. Built in 1993, this single level home feels much larger than its 1600 square feet with its open beamed ceilings, abundant natural light, open floor plan and innovative use of space utilizing the concepts of Feng Shui. The Zen house has been featured in various publications including Sunset Magazine, and most recently in the American Institute of Architect's Home Tour in Carmel in 2010. Architect David Martin received the AIA 1994 Merit award for its creative design.
Several "green" features were incorporated during construction such as the reuse of the foundation and floor framing of the original cottage and south-facing windows and doors to take full advantage of the sun. Other quality features include radiant heat limestone floors, granite countertops, maple cabinetry, ridge skylights, French doors leading to the Japanese Gardens and Shoji panels thought-out the house. The master bathroom features a Japanese soaking tub with television, a separate shower and two walk-in closets. The home is designed to provide unexpected privacy and yet sits in the heart of downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Zen House is truly a unique escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
